my work as an art educator has centered around at-risk student populations, community-based art programming, and alternative education practices with a number of projects nationally and internationally. in 2007 i moved back to iowa city to begin a masters degree in special education, continuing my career as an alternative high school art teacher at tate high school. designing the course art in the community in 2008, i embarked on a collaboration between tate high school students and other area schools to create a community mural in the broadway-wetherby neighborhood. as an extension of this class i began my dissertation research for a phd in art education by painting a community mural in africa, completing a cultural exchange between students from iowa city and uganda.
